Mosquito Trap Comparison
Rating
With so many brands, sizes, and types of mosquito
traps being sold out there, I figured why not make a simple
mosquito trap comparison rating page to help you determine
which product is best for you. I decided to narrow it down to 3
different best-selling traps.
There are 5 different comparison points for each trap:
Functionality (how it works and all that), effectiveness, cost
(to help you compare prices), maintenance and durability. Okay
let’s get started!
Flowtron Model BK-80D
80-Watt

Info
Functionality: Lantern
shaped trap that uses a strong black light bulb to attract
flying bugs and will zap-fry them once they get close to the
surrounding grid. It attracts mosquitoes as well thanks to a
special mosquito-attractant cartridge which is included with
the unit. It uses standard electrical socket to get up and
running.
Effectiveness:
5/5
It’s capable of zapping a ton of mosquitoes but sadly,
even flying bugs that eat mosquitoes are not spared. They tend
to get zapped as well. I wish such collateral damage could be
avoided but it’s a cold, hard world out there, especially for
flying bugs mucking around my backyard. Provides 1-1/2-acre
coverage.
Cost: 5/5
I think you can get it for less than 70 bucks from
Amazon.com. Prices on Amazon fluctuate, but their prices are
usually much cheaper than retail stores and with the free
shipping option, it’s a no-brainer.
Maintenance:
4/5
Not much. The electrical grids tend to clog up
quickly, especially when there’s a truckload of flying insects
buzzing outside your home. This means you have to clean
the grids regularly. Also you got to change the octenol
mosquito lure cartridges every few months or so.
Durability: 5/5.
The casing is pretty tough. It’s made of steel with
zinc coating and it’s rustproof, rainproof, and nuclear proof
(that’s over the top, sorry). Also, the protective
exterior enclosure prevents your kids or pets from getting
injured.

Functionality: A propane
type mosquito trap. Mosquitoes love CO2 gas so this trap offers
the love of death by transforming clean-burning propane into
carbon dioxide. The gas lures the mosquitoes and when they
approach the trap, a strong vacuum kicks in pulling the insects
into a sticky paper trap. No messy power cord to deal with
since it requires a propane tank to run.
Effectiveness: For trapping
mosquitoes, I give it 5/5.
However, bigger flying insects tend to get stuck to
the exterior. Heck, some of them are strong enough to withstand
the vacuum so you might want to bump the grade down by 1 if
you’re planning on using this trap to capture other annoying
insects. Provides 1-acre coverage.
Cost: 3/5
You can buy one of these babies for slightly above 300
dollars. Top-quality propane mosquito traps don’t come cheap I
know, but I wish it was cheaper in light of the various
maintenance costs which I’m going to mention next.
Maintenance: 3/5
Quite a few things to maintain here and they will set
you back some dollars each month. One is the propane tank (20
bucks a pop) which can last you for about 20 – 25 days. The
sticky paper traps have to be replaced once they become too
clogged up. Baits need changing too.
Durability: 5/5.
Very solid built. I’ve had this model for almost a
year now and it still works fine. I already have a couple of
electronic mosquito traps, but I chose to buy this propane trap
as well because I was curious and wanted to find out whether it
works or not. Durability wise, so far so good, though I
have to admit that I don’t use it as much as I would like to
due to the maintenance costs. Also, I should add that the
whole unit feels quite heavy with the propane tank attached.
Remove that first if you want to have an easier time lugging
the trap around your yard.

Mosquito Control Trap MCU-800

Info
Functionality: Attract
mosquitoes by releasing CO2 gas. The key feature here is the
device’s ability to release CO2 in lesser quantities and in a
gradual manner, thus significantly increasing the capture rate.
Now, in comparison with the Flowtron BK-80 D 80 outdoor
mosquito trap, the Mega Catch Ultra MCU-800 has a built-in
programmable timer so you don’t have to hook it up with a
separate outdoor timer. It runs on power cord with extension
included in the package.
Effectiveness:
5/5
This is a premium trap, works extremely well and
capable of 1-1/2-acre coverage. Now to be frank with you, I
don’t own this particular model but my cousin has one at his
place in Wisconsin. I stayed there for over a month due to
business in that area. I managed to play around with this
trap extensively during my stay and let me tell you, this thing
works like you won’t believe. The slow-releasing CO2 system
really nailed it down pat as plenty of mosquitoes were caught
effortlessly. However, here’s the problem and I think
it’s a pretty big one too…
Cost: 2/5
Yes, the cost is the problem. This baby isn’t cheap,
about 500+ bucks per pop. Don’t get me wrong, the MCU-800 is a
top-quality product but the price is definitely on the high
side. I like trying out various mosquito killing products
because I kind of have a fetish for killing the flying morons.
See, I have a lot of mosquito-destroying weapons at my disposal
and would love to get this one as well, but the cost puts me
off. If you have the extra cash to splash, then by all means go
ahead and get it.
Maintenance:
4/5
Baits have to be changed. Catch containers have to be
emptied and the catch bag has to be cleaned. Simple stuff. All
in all, not a lot of maintenance required.
Durability: 5/5.
The MCU-800 is a very durable product. It’s quite
heavy and looks something out of the Ghostbusters movies (the
proton backpack).
Okay that’s it. I believe this is quite a decent
mosquito trap comparison ratings because it mentions the pros
and cons of each item plus other important tidbits to help you
ascertain which trap suits your requirements and budget.
Hopefully in the future, manufacturers would release more
high-quality mosquito traps that require minimal maintenance
and cost.
